Thiefs in Leslieville/Voleurs dans Leslieville

Monday at five o'clock in the morning at the Gallery Ben Navaee in the heart of Leslieville, there were some thiefs who decided to steal some art work. Four paintings by upcoming artists have been stolen. They apparently broke the front windown of the gallery and took four nice pieces of art. The police of the division 55 in Toronto is conducting an investigation. I find it absolutely revolting to rob someone from their art not only for monetary value but also for the hard work and heart that an artist put into its creation.

My son was one of the artists involved and that is why I am perhaps a bit more concerned than usual. But, I promise you I will never be the same after this incident... I know the pain it caused my son. He took his paintings out of the gallery although the expo was supposed to be until the 28th, other artists chose to leave them there. Here is the painting that was robbed and if you happen to see it anywhere,please report to the Toronto Police,division 55!

If the robbers have some heart, please find a way to return the work of those artists,please do!

Une expo qui tourne mal. Lundi le 22 juin, après le vernissage de samedi le 20 juin àa la galerie Ben Navaee sur la rue Queen à Toronto, au coeur de Leslieville,des voleurs ont brisé la vitrine avant et ont dérobé quatre oeuvres d'artistes contemporains. Une de ces oeuvres appartenait à mon fils David qui avait mis son coeur à l'ouvrage et qui attendait beaucoup de cette expo,un beau tremplin en plein coeur du quartier montant de Leslieville.

je ne connais pas les autres artistes,mais j'ai pu admirer leurs oeuvres samedi. Mon fils a décidé de retirer ses oeuvres de l'expo tandis que d'autres les laisseront jusqu'à la fin.

Si vous voyez ce tableau de David Hébert, prière d'avertir la police de Toronto de la division 55.

Leslieville (à suivre,,,) to be followed...

Leslieville neighborhood is booming! A neighborhood in the past composed mostly of workers,laborers,even twenty years ago,but now inhabited by a totally different crowd!
We have bought our townhome a bit less than ten years ago, there was still many empty old storefront or runned down without interest for the young ''yuppies'' that were about to invade the walls little by little,and more and more in the last few years. The gay community is also well represented,a bunch of young couples in their thirties, young professionels,people in their fifties with teenagers or alone and families with young children... here we go for a bit of demography of that fashionable neighborhood!
Lots of new cafes, restaurants,pubs,gelatos,small fashion and avant-garde boutiques are the apanage of Queen Street east. To the east, you just arrive in the Beaches and to the west,you are in the heart of the downtown core in just a few minutes by streetcar. You have the Lake Ontario, you can cycle down to the Leslieville pit and see the CN tower or you almost think that you are in the country.
Between the Beaches and Leslieville,you have butcher shops,sushi markets,gelatis,wool shops, art galleries and much more...
It is like the phoenix who is rising from its ashes.

Leslieville it is also the neighborhood where the old shops have stopped their pollution, the cyclepath, the boardwalk of the Beaches.
there is still lot of ugly old stuff but that is what gives this quadrilatere its character: Old Chiny Lily building and Duke of York at the corner of Queen and Leslie.....

Le quartier de Leslieville de Toronto est en pleine effervescence. Un quartier plutôt ouvrier, il y a encore vingt ans; il héberge maintenant une faune bien différente. Nous avons acheté notre maison de ville il y a moins de dix ans et à cette époque il y avait encore plusieurs commerces libres ou délabrés abritant des trucs sans intérêt pour les jeunes ''yuppies qui allaient venir envahir ses murs petit à petit, au fil des dernières années. La communauté gay y est bien représentée,de jeunes couples dans la trentaine,professionnels, des gens dans la cinquantaine avec des enfants qui ont déjà quitté le nid familial,et des familles avec jeunes enfants... voilà un peu de démographie pour ce quartier à la mode! Des restos, des cafés, des pubs,des gelatos,des petites boutiques de mode innovatrices,le streetcar qui vous amène dans les Beaches ou au centre-ville dans dix ou vingt minutes, des pistes cyclables à proximité, les cheminées des usines qui ont cessé de cracher,le lac Ontario font que ce bout de chemin sur Queen et ses rues adjacentes est en perpétuelle croissance! Entre les Beaches et le centre-ville, maintenant il y a des pubs,des bars, des cafés, des restos,bistros,boutique de laine,boucher,marché sushi,boulangeries,place gelato,boutique de livres,des galeries d'art et j'en passe...
C'est comme le phoenix qui renaît de ses cendres, c'est un quartier qui est riche en histoire.
Il y a encore des trucs plus ou moins laids qui persistent,une cour de ferraille,un hôtel qui est là depuis longtemps et qui rassemble une clientèle assidue: The Duke of York,des immeubles dont ce China Lily qui semble vide mais dont on est pas certain...

The Sound of Music: the Toronto way!

How do you solve a problem like Maria? That is one of the songs in the show we saw last night, it was also the title of the show (contest) on CBC, where the public could choose their ''own'' Maria to play in the Andrew Lloyd Weber's Toronto production of the sound of music. We had voted for Jenna,the perfect candidate for the role. To my husband and I, she had what it takes: the voice, the physic,the ''joie de vivre'' and the professionalism! When we heard that she was the understudy and that she was going to be the one for Wednesday the 14th of January,we booked our front row tickets for the Princess of Wales! Anticipation was a weak word, we were so eager to see fill in the shoes of a Julie Andrew.
Comment résoudre un problème comme Maria? C'est une des chansons faisant partie du spectacle que nous vaons vu hier soir, c'était aussi le titre de l'émission télé(CBC) où le public pouvait choisir,voter pour la gagnante qui allait incarner Maria dans la comédie musicale de Andrew LLoyd Weber. Nous avions voté pour Jenna la candidate parfaite pour incarner ce rôle. Elle possédait cette joie de vivre, le physique et le professionalisme nécessaire pour faire de Maria un succès. Lorsque nous avons appris qu'elle assumait le second rôle le mercredi soir, nous avons réservé nos billets en première rangée,à deux centimètres de la cage de l'orchestre! Nous avons vu la communauté religieuse défiler devant nous et le lever du rideau sur un décor montagneux. Nous avions de la difficulté à retenir notre souffle jusqu'au moment où nous nous sommes aperçus que notre favorite n'y était pas ce soir-là!
We love theater, we have been connected somehow to that world in a special way since childhood. We are ''good'' critics, although sometime we can sink into criticism...:)
Nous adorons le théâtre, nous y sommes connectés d'une façcon ou d'une autre depuis notre tendre enfance. Nous sommes de ''bons''critiques, quoique parfois nous nous enfonçcons dans la ''criticaillerie''!:)
Well, the stage was at two inches from us, when we saw the nuns walking on that strip in front of the orchestra cage,we were getting warmer,as we knew what was coming next and then we saw that it was not our favorite Jenna!
We said to ourselves we will give her a chance,well we did not like her performance. She does not have the prestance,the stamina for the role. Well,it is our opinion and we will stick to it! No harm done!
Nous nous sommes dit que nous donnerions la chance au coureur mais malgré tout nous n'avons pas aimé son interprétation. Elle n'a pas ce qu'il faut pour ce rôle. C'est notre opinion et on la garde, il n'y a pas de mal! :) On est pas méchants!
I was absolutely mesmorized by the mother superior, a Montrealer (Noëlla Huet) with a wonderful voice and stage presence. A role that I would have liked to own!
Je fus tout simplement envoutée par la mèere supérieure, une montréalaise (Noëlla Huet) èa la voix merveilleuse et d'une présence extraordinaire sur scène. Ah! ce que j'aurais aimé interpréter ce rôle!
The children were very good, especially the youngest cast member,cute as a button! The boys looked a bit tired though! Captain Von Trapp (Burke Moses) is a good actor, but I did not feel the chemistry between him and Maria(Elicia)!
Louisa(Emily Hawton) has a great voice and is a very good actress,she has a future in the business. The Baroness Shraeder is an amazing actress and the relationship with the captain was more believable.
Les enfants étaient charmants, tout spécialement la petite, qui était adorable! Les petits garçons avaient l'air bien fatigués mais Emily Hawton(Louisa) a un futur plus que certain dans ce métier. La baronesse Shraeder est interprétée avec force et sa relation avec l'acteur incarnant le capitaine Von Trapp!
The decors and the music were outstanding. I have only one regret, and it is to have not seen Jenna in the role, it would have uplifted the whole play. We know people who saw her in the production and they were amazed by her talent.
Oh well! It is worth the money if you come to Toronto!
Les décors étaient vraiment bien exécutés et la musique superbe!
La chimie ne passait pas entre le capitaine Von Trapp et Maria!
C'est un bon spectacle!
